Debt collectors are generally governed under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, found at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

The Act sets forth the rules and regulations regarding consumer debt collectors. There are specific methods that cannot be used as well as specific times in which a debt collector may not contact you. Please visit the website listed above and read about your rights. The Act is not terribly long so you should be able to sift through it in short order.
